Muse Image launched on July 7, 2026 as the second major release from Meta Superintelligence Labs, following the Muse Spark language model in April. According to Meta's own communications and press coverage of the launch:

Muse Image is positioned as a consumer feature first, free for typical use inside Meta apps.
Meta is "still evaluating" whether to make Muse Image available to outside developers.

What an official API would need to offer

Useful context for judging any future announcement — a competitive image API in 2026 ships with:

Published per-image or per-token pricing (Gemini and OpenAI both do)
Generation + instruction-based editing endpoints — editing is Muse Image's differentiator, so an API without it would miss the point
Commercial-use terms clear enough for client work

Choosing between them

Editing-heavy product (photo apps, e-commerce tooling) → Nano Banana 2. Instruction-based editing through the Gemini API is the closest thing to what a Muse Image API would offer.

Cost control or data-sensitive workloads → FLUX self-hosted; your GPU, your weights, your data.

Why Meta may never ship a public API

Meta's strategy with Muse Image is engagement inside its own apps: the model is deeply wired into Instagram (including the controversial ability to remix other users' public photos — see how to disable that). An open API would let that value leak outside Meta's walled garden. That's also why the model requires a Meta account.

There's a second, quieter reason: advertising. Muse Image powers creative tools in Advantage+, where Meta monetizes generation indirectly through ad spend. An API at market rates would compete with that internal customer — and the internal customer pays better.
